Many Allied Prisoners of War were recovered from POW camps in Japan and moved to Manila to await transport back home. The Dutch Hospital Ship, Tjitjalengka and the New Zealand Hospital Ship, Maunganui, repatriated some of them to New Zealand in September and October, 1945.

Several members of the 2/30th were among those on board Maunganui when she departed Manila on 19/9/1945. The ship sailed to New Zealand where the men destined for Australia were transhipped to Tjitjalengka for the remainder of the journey home. They arrived in Sydney on 12/10/1945.
