Some members of the Battalion who were sick, injured or wounded in action, were repatriated directly to Australia prior to the Allied surrender of Singapore on 15/2/1942.

As the waters in South East Asia became more dangerous, some of the last ships to leave Singapore headed for Ceylon. The men remained in hospital or convalescent depot in Colombo until it was safe to return to Australia.
