Members of the Battalion who had been sent to Japan, were recovered from various POW camps. They were scattered throughout Japan, and were eventually moved to Manila by plane or ship. Here they were housed at an American base until transport became available to get them home. Some had to wait for several weeks but they eventually boarded the HMS Striker on 22/9/1945 for the trip to Sydney.

   

Sydney, NSW 1945-10-05. 8th Division Ex Prisoners of War disembarked at Pyrmont Wharf from the Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier, HMS Striker which had returned them from prison camps in Japan. They are being issued with new clothing and food coupons prior to being transferred to the 113th Australian General Hospital.
