Surviving members of the Battalion who
had been in Japanese POW camps were moved to Manila. Here they were
housed at an American base until a ship became available. Some had to
wait for several weeks, but they were eventually included in a group of
240 AIF POWs, who boarded the British aircraft carrier HMS Speaker
on 4/10/1945 for the trip to Sydney.
