Alex Dandie found out that Bill Gilligan was a cousin of Mrs. Barbara Cracknell of West Ryde, the wife of the then President of the 1st Denistone Scout Group and a Manager of the C.B.C. Sydney, Kent St. Branch. Mrs Cracknell at Ingleburn Camp to welcome him back on Recovery says that Bill's mate, Vince Bylos, having died in Darwin, after he had been landed from the "Esperance Bay", too sick to continue the journey, was not with the unit to greet his Mother and family, who were there to meet him, and that Bill went over to Vince's Mother, before he greeted his own family, to console her over the loss of her son, taking her in his arms as he broke the sad news to her.
