The USS Chengango was used to carry liberated prisoners of war (POW) from Fukuoka No 2 Prisoner of War Camp at Nagasaki to Okinawa after the fall of Japan. The USS Chengango left Nagasaki Bay 13/9/1945 and the POW's were disembarked on Okinawa on 18/9/1945.

The recovered POWs were eventually moved to Manila by plane or ship. Here they were housed at an American base until transport became available to get them home. Some had to wait for several weeks but they eventually boarded the British aircraft carrier HMS Formidable on 4/10/1945 for the trip to Sydney.
