While the Battalion was in this area, contact was made with the enemy at 0700hrs on 30/1/1942, when a Japanese patrol was attacked by C Company. Also, during the morning of the 30th, Sgt. Christoff was killed near the 18 mile peg when 4 enemy aircraft attacked the armoured car he was travelling in. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for his part in this action.

At 1300hrs the same day, the battalion withdrew to the 21 mile peg. They set off again at 2000hrs and travelled via Kulai and Senai, and arrived on Singapore Island at 0130 on 31/1/1942.
