• In the last days before capitulation, a number of Battalion members escaped from Singapore and returned to Australia

• Other men who suffered illness or had been wounded in action prior to the surrender on 15 February, 1942 were repatriated to Australia, usually via Ceylon

• The remainder of the 2/30th became POWs and were sent to various camps in Singapore, Thailand, Burma, Borneo and Japan. By the time the Japanese surrendered in September 1945, the majority of the Battalion were back in Singapore. Most of these men returned to Australia on board Esperance Bay, which departed Singapore on 22/9/1945

• There were also many more in other POW camps, scattered throughout South East Asia and Japan. Nearly 20 different ships were used to transport these men home to Australia

• Some Battalion members were in need of urgent medical treatment and returned home earlier on Hospital Ships. A number of the most seriously ill men were flown to Labuan for urgent treatment, or sent directly home to Australia
