Circular No. 116
1st September, 1956

Official Organ of 2/30th Bn. A.I.F. Assn

COMMITTEE

Dear Dig,

Doug McLaggan of Lowe Street, Clovelly, recently spent a holiday in New Zealand with his wife. They chartered a tiny Auster plane and flew around the Alps so that Doug could obtain some close up photography shots. Doug reports that he met Alf Hyem at the Beverly Park Golf Club recently. Alf is well.

Best wishes go to Reg Napper and wife on the birth of their daughter Rhonda.

Ray Brown of Bankstown travels the country for Robert Reid. He is doing fairly well and keeps good health.

Don Garner (Sgt) lives at French's Forest. He is a hotel supervisor and manager and likes his job very much. We hope to see Don at the next reunion - he hasn't been to a function for years.

Teddie Lutz, our baseball expert, drives a bus at Yanderra and has very little time to get down to Sydney now. Any time you pass through Picton drop in to the Bus Depot on the off chance, that Ted is there. If you meet him the bus time-tables could possibly go haywire for a couple of hours.

Ossie Jackson and his wife are receiving best wishes on the birth of their second son. The boy is first class quality and will be a great joy to them both.

Unfortunately, we must also extend our deepest sympathy to Ossie on the death, in June, of his mother. Ossie and his brother were devoted to their mother and feel her loss very keenly. The little Presbyterian Church at Bangalow was far too small to hold the many friends who came to pay their respects and quite a number of chaps from the Unit, and their wives, attended. Four letters and a newspaper cutting arrived with news of the bereavement and it is evident that Ossie's mother was a great influence for good in the Northern Rivers.

Harry Teasdale is still bragging about young Max and he predicts that Black Jack will have a bumper crop of grandchildren in the Northern District this year.

Ashley Pascoe is well and is a good newshound for us. He sees all the country newspapers and telephones immediately any news of our country friends he reads of.

LAST POST:

We record with deep regret the death of Fred Chandler. Fred was of "A" Coy., and rejoiced in the nickname of "Popeye". Fred was one who found himself unable to adjust himself to normal life after the war years and who can blame him for being so unfortunate? He was a member of the Unit, faced the Japanese with vigour and was wounded in action. Our sympathy goes out to his sister and brother and was officially conveyed by Reg Ellis and Ned Kelaher (sic - KELEHER) who attended the Requiem Mass for his soul. Les Hall arranged for our official wreath.

Jack Petersen of Fairy Meadow, is very proud of his new baby son. Jack has not been in good health for many years but the birth of a son has made his step a lot lighter.

Snowy Hampton of Ballina is an active member of the R.S.L. sub-branch in that town. He is tardy with his "subs" but quick with news. He was one of our correspondents regarding the death of Ossie's mother. We hope to renew acquaintance with Snowy at our next reunion.

Ray Godbolt is still barbering and now lives at Merewether. Ray wants the address of Ernie Ross, so here it is. Ernie lives at Auburn.

"Jacko" Jackson is playing "A" Grade Golf for Castlecrag now. His main purpose in life is to keep in good health so that he can maintain his standard of golf. Keith Stevens of the concert party is a member of Castlecrag Club. Keith often does a little impromptu entertaining when the ale is flowing.

Ted Skuse - "A"' Coy - gave away his daughter in marriage an the 8th June. Ted didn't realise how quickly the years had slipped away until his daughter announced her engagement.

ANNUAL REUNION:

We could almost call this the "Paddy Walsh reunion" as we hope that we will see a larger gathering than usual. Paddy will be there for the first time and has said that he would "like to meet all the Boys." All the usual lads will be there of course but we would like to be able to contact all those members who have not yet joined the Association.

Those are the lads whom we wish to inform of the reunion and if you know the address of any such person we would like you to ring Ron Maston or better still send him the completed slip on the bottom of this Makan.

The reunion will be held, at the Gallipoli Legion Club Rooms on Friday night the 23rd November, 1956.

If you live in the country and can let us know a few weeks beforehand we will provide accommodation for you for the weekend.

Kevin Ward of East Bankstown still has, some, excellent, enlargements of the “A" Coy. photographs which were taken at Batu Pahat. The enlargements are in sepia and are 10'" x 6", the coat is 10/- posted and that is the exact amount that they cost Kevin. If you wish to ring him you can get him at UL.3932.

Alex Dandie is a keen association man and is seen at all our functions. He does a fair amount of welfare work as a hobby and consequently never fails to make an annual donation to our Welfare Fund.

Alex "Dadda" Olley is now living at Larnook, via Lismore. An extract from his newsy letter is as follows:

"Since last writing I have changed my address and occupation. I am now back at my pre-war occupation, that of farming. I am buying my mother's property. Although I wasn't dissatisfied with my previous job (a carpenter) I decided there was more future on the land. Lot's hope I haven't made a mistake.

We shifted to here, 18 miles from Lismore, nearly twelve months ago and although I haven't done so good in the first year I am hoping that things will improve over the next twelve months. My wife and family are all well (3 boys and 2 girls). Give my regards to the blokes."

Please forward cheques, money orders and postal notes to Reg Ellis at Boronia Park. All money orders and postal notes to be made payable at the G.P.O., Sydney.

Cheerio,

STAN ARNEIL
