Surrender 15/2/1942

The march to Changi

On 17/2/1942, two days after the surrender, the Battalion, together with all other British and Australian troops, moved off by foot from their final defensive perimeter around Tanglin Barracks, to and headed for the Prisoner of War Camp at Selerang Barracks, Changi.

The 14 hour journey covered a distance of approximately 16 miles, and the route taken was as follows:

  • Tanglin Barracks / Tyersall Palace / Botanic Gardens

  • Napier Road

  • Tanglin Road

  • Orchard Road

  • Scott's Road

  • Newton Circus

  • Kampong Java Road

  • Norfolk Road

  • Balestier Road

  • Serangoon Road

  • Upper Serangoon Road

  • Tampines Road (now Tampines Road and Old Tampines Road)

  • Changi Road (now Upper Changi Road North)

  • Selerang Barracks
