POWs with beri beri
Tarsau, Far East; Burma Thailand Railway.
Four prisoners of war (POWs) with beri beri. Identified is Jan Hakkaart (left) a radio operator from the Dutch Navy (RNN) who was captured in Java. Tarsau, now known as Nam Tok, is 130 kilometres from Nong Pladuk (also known as Non Pladuk), or 284 kilometres south of Thanbyuzayat. It was used by the Japanese as both a staging camp for POWs moving north to work on railway construction, and a base hospital during the period from November 1942 to April 1944. During this period 15,029 sick passed through it, of whom 806 died.
