QX24188 - THOMAS, John Hedley Star, Pte. - B Company, 12 Platoon
Letter dated 21/6/1945, from Queensland Echelon and Records, advising Mrs. Thomas that her husband had been last seen in Thailand in March, 1944.
This information came from ex Prisoners of War who had been recovered after the sinking of a Japanese transport ship.
This was most probably the Rakuyo Maru, which was transporting POWs from Singapore to Japan in September, 1944. On 12/9/1944, the ship sank, after it was torpedoed by a US Submarine.
Over 500 soldiers died following the sinking. 82 were rescued by Japanese ships and transported to POW camps in Japan. A further 92 were rescued by the submarines USS Pampanito, USS Queensfish and USS Sealion, and returned to Australia.
