The Office of Australian War Graves, part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, maintains Gardens of Remembrance in all capital cities of Australia. The NSW Garden of Remembrance was established in the early 1960s, and is located within the Rookwood Necropolis in Sydney.

Veterans who are entitled to be commemorated in the Gardens include those whose deaths are accepted as due to war service, and ex-Prisoners of War. Each eligible veteran is commemorated by a small brass plaque, which includes their name, Service Number, date of death and age at death.
