Following their release, most of the men of the Battalion sailed from Singapore on board Esperance Bay on 22/9/1945. Largs Bay, with Battalion members bound for Brisbane, was also on this trip and the two ships arrived in Darwin on 30/9/1945.

While in Darwin, NX51762 Vince Bylos, became seriously ill, and was evacuated to 107 Australian General Hospital (107 AGH). Despite treatment, he died on 3/10/1945, and was laid to rest at the Adelaide River War Cemetery. (Source: Makan No. 339 and NAA: B883 Service Record)

Proceeding south, the two ships passed Thursday Island on 3/10/1945. They separated on Sunday, 7/10/1945, when Largs Bay headed for Brisbane. Esperance Bay continued to Sydney and berthed at the Finger Wharf at Woolloomooloo, on Tuesday, 9/10/1945.
