Makan – No. 145
Feb/March, 1961

COMMITTEE

Dear Dig.

GEMAS ANNIVERSARY – 14th JANUARY

A representative gathering from our Unit and 2/15th Field Regiment placed wreaths in the Cenotaph at 7.00 p.m. Rowley Richards, President of the 2/15th Regiment Association, placed a wreath on behalf of their Association and the, 'Old Man' did the honours for us. The 2/30th wreath was a splendid plaque made from natural flowers by Mrs. 'Popeye' Kentwell. We place on record our appreciation to her for this gesture.

Several 'next of kin' attended but we did not collect all their names so will refrain from mentioning any particular people. However, the attendance of approximately forty men was almost an insult to the memory of those friends of ours who paid the supreme sacrifice during the war, or who have since died as a result of war disabilities. An annual tribute to their memory is perhaps the last we can do. They gave their lives; we are too busy to reserve a few minutes on one day a year.

The 2/15th and ourselves will probably form a sub-committee during the year to ensure that next year’s Anniversary is what it should be. However, in the main, the problem belongs to you as individuals. Let’s see what your attitude will be next year.

REGIMENTAL TIE

We have ordered a further quantity of regimental ties in response to repeated requests from members. The new ties are of a different design from our present tie, which is really for daytime wear only. Our present tie is suitable so our members have frequently told us, for wearing to Battalion functions only. The material and the design were, also, not exempt from criticism.

The Committee, therefore, decided that an all-purpose Regimental tie, suitable for both day and evening wear, would be more acceptable to the members. The new tie is made from silk and has a blue background upon which miniature colour patches are woven in the correct shades of purple and gold.

The finished product will be a very handsome ties one which you will wear, proudly, to any function at any time. The cost will be £1.0.0 per tie and as they are being woven in England, delivery to us will be in not less than four months.

However, we have committed the Association to buy them and we are selling them to members at 'cost price plus postage' so we must have the money in, as soon as possible. I believe that this is the type of tie that you will wear constantly and as such, you might like to purchase two, as a tie which is frequently worn will not last forever. Lastly, we will be unlikely to purchase any move batches of ties so please PLACE YOUR ORDER ROW, so that you may not be disappointed. Remember £1.0.0 each to the Treasurer, now.

BADGES

We have received further supplies of badges. They will cost you 5/- each. Send your cheque along and your badge will be sent to you.

LETTER FROM CONCORD - J. CONN

It is a long time since we heard from our friend Jack Conn, but during a recent spell at Concord he wrote the following letter, which is too good to cut up.

"Have bean meaning to drop you a line for months now to change my mailing address, so now that I have a bit of spare time am taking this opportunity to wish you and the Association all the very best. Have been in here for a month now, wasn't too good when I arrived but am feeling much better now and hope to be discharged about Tuesday.

My home address for future “Makan” is: Uralgurra P.O. via Kempsey. I have a dairy farm and milk about 60 cows, plus pigs, calves etc. or rather the Bank and I own it between us, them having the biggest share. I married a North Coast girl and we have three kiddies, one girl 10, one girl 8 and one boy 4 years. We were fortunate enough early last month to have the 'Old Man' visit Kempsey for the 14-18 Diggers' reunion and was very grateful for the opportunity to meet up with him again as I hadn't seen him since we arrived home; he really looked well am pleased to say.

I often sea Scotty Wallace and have a lemonade with him and would be very pleased to see any of the boys if they are ever travelling up that way . Never was any good at letter writing, Stan, so will ring off for this trip, wishing you and through you, the rest of the Unit the very best for the future.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held at the 'Eastern Cafe', Dixon Street, on Friday night 3rd March, commencing at, approximately, 8.00 p.m.

Members who will be staying in town after ceasing work will find that a meal at the 'Eastern Cafe' is a riot of fun end is a good way to start the evening. Try to come along to the Annual General Meting and assist the Committee to keep the, Association running smoothly.

At the last Annual Meeting a notice of motion was given that subscriptions be increased to 10/-. You are therefore officially notified, as provided by the Constitution, as follows:

NOTICE

Notice is hereby given that at the Annual General Meeting of 2/30th Bn. A.I.F. Don't forget! he ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING,- held at the 'Eastern Cafe' Dixon Street, Friday night 3rd March.

ANNUAL UNIT PICNIC

Our Annual picnic will be held an Sunday 12th March at Lane Cove National Park. The venue, No. 6 Playground, is reached by following the road through the main gates and then right around the park. The playground is particularly suitable, being completely isolated from other playgrounds, is right on the river bank and has toilets, swings, seesaws and barbecues. The last two picnics have been very successful but the Committee hope to make this one the biggest yet. There will be race and fun for both children and parents and we hope that you will make a big effort to attend. Rain or shine, the picnic will be held and we guarantee you a good day if you come along. Cost per family unit will be 10/-, irrespective of the size of the family.

To assist the Committee with the catering we ask you to complete the form below and return, to Bessie Ellie as soon as possible. Please do this at once as we have not a great deal of time to complete our arrangements.

TO: MRS. B. ELLIS, BORONIA PARK.

I will be coming to the picnic on Sunday 12th Much and will bring the following children.

NAME AGE

See you at the picnic,

STAN ARNEIL.
